Heating rebate next month to help thousands in Islington

Three thousand Islington council tenants with communal heating or hot water will receive a rebate of at least £145 per household next month, as the council prepares to pass on savings it has made in buying gas.
Islington Council has secured an improved deal in its bulk purchasing of gas for estates with communal heating and hot water, which means the savings from the lower cost of gas can be passed on to tenants.
The council is expected to authorise the payments at its Executive meeting on January 14th, with rebates being passed on to tenants' rent accounts soon after.
Cllr James Murray, Islington Council's executive member for housing and development, said: "We want to make sure tenants benefit from this money that the council has got through a better deal buying gas. Any extra savings that we can pass on to tenants are particularly important when government cuts and higher prices are hitting people in Islington."
