Police are investigating the shooting of man in Islington on New Years Day, and are seeking the help of anyone who may have information.

The incident took pace at around 4:10am on Sunday 1 January, where a 22-year old man suffering from gunshot wounds was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed that the suspect fled in the direction of Leather Lane.

The victim, who has not been named, is known to have been at the Clerkenwell House Wine Bar in Hatton Wall, EC1, in the hours before he was killed. It is believed that an altercation took place in the venue at around 4am, and officers are investigating the possibility that this may have been a factor in his subsequent murder.

DCI John Crossley of Trident said: "The venue was very busy going into the early hours of New Year's Day and we are extremely keen to talk to anyone who was in attendance. "We believe the victim was involved in an incident in the venue and that this may have been the prompt for his killing. If you were there and noticed a dispute taking place I would urge you to get in touch as soon as possible, to enable us to bring those responsible to justice."

Officers believe they know the victim's identity but await formal identification. Next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Monday 2 January at St Pancras mortuary.

DCI Crossley added: "I would also like to appeal for those with businesses in the area to make contact, so that we can access their premises and retrieve CCTV footage. It is essential that we view any CCTV as soon as possible to see if anything of use to the inquiry can be gleaned."
