A star of the silver screen, a professional wrestler, an Olympian, and a champion of tenants' rights are amongst the shortlist for a prestigious Islington People's Plaque.

The public will once again have their say on which of ten worthy nominees will be commemorated with a green plaque as part of Islington Council's popular scheme. The shortlist has been compiled from public suggestions for an Islington-related person, place or event that they would like to see marked.

The plaque scheme – now in its third year - recognises major figures and milestones in the borough's history.  The 2013 People's Plaques nominations shortlist comprises:

Betty Knight, social campaigner (Spa Green, EC1)

Louis Wain, artist (St John Street, EC1)

Dr Gordon Signy, pioneering pathologist and Olympic fencer (Alwyne Road, N1)

Jackie 'Mr TV' Pallo, professional wrestler (Britannia Row, N1)

Jean Simmons, Hollywood actress (Hillmarton Road, N7)

Len Harvey, champion boxer (Upper Street, N1)

Michael Faraday, chemist & physicist (Barnsbury Grove, N1)

Nat Gonella, Jazz trumpeter & band leader (Edward Square, N7)

Ronald 'Carl' Giles, cartoonist (City Road, N1)

Robert Paul, pioneering cinematographer and 'Father of British Cinema' (Albion Place, EC1)

Votes can be made online at: www.islington.gov.uk/plaques, or by filling in a form at your local library or in Islington Local History Centre in Finsbury Library, St John Street, EC1V 4NB.

The deadline for votes is Monday 8 April, after which three winners will be announced.

Cllr Catherine West, Leader of Islington Council, said:

"There were lots of worthy nominees put forward by the public for the 2013 people's plaques, so my thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

"Once again, this year's shortlist represents Islington's rich history, where so many people, places and events made a big impact on the borough and often further afield as well.

"It's up to our residents to decide which three from this list they would like to see honoured with a permanent memorial in their community."

In 2012, Founder of the North Islington Welfare Centre, Florence Keen; painter and sculptor Cyril Mann; and local campaigner, Jack Kennedy were revealed as winners of the public vote for an Islington People's Plaque. Permanent memorials will be put in place for each of them in 2013 and 2014.
