Summer strips away our last cast-iron excuse to sit around at home and be lazy, so if you're looking to get active by taking part in some sporting events in coming weeks, here are some great ideas for fun and fitness here in Islington.

For those into raquet sports, Islington Tennis Centre has six indoor and two outdoor tennis courts for you to knock about in. There are regular drop in sessions for those witout a tennis buddy (arranged by age group), and those wanting to improve their game can book tennis lessons with a coach for less than £10 per 1,2 or 3 hour session. Don't forget, you can also book the tennis courts at Highbury Fields for practice sessions.

Young footie fans can make the most of the borough's fine footballing tradition, by attending sessions with Arsenal Kickz. All youngsters aged between 12 and 18 are welcome to join the sessions in Elthorne Park, which include access to

organised football along with pathways to volunteer and accreditation

If you can't face the prospect of 'proper' team sports and the sheer shortness of breath involved, there's always table tennis! Ping, the London-wide table tennis organisation, has an interactive map of ping pong tables open to the public, and there's one in the outdoor gym area at Whittington Park. So why not grab a friend, grab a bat and ball and start pinging your way to fitness before the sun goes in!
