There seem to be only two topics of conversations happening in pubs at the moment: where you're going to be watching the World Cup, or where you're going to avoid it. In most parts of London, the options would only extend to 'local boozer' or 'screaming at the telly at home', but this being Islington, there are some fairly unusual and utterly civilisted ways to watch the World Cup, from screenings in cinemas to football-inspired poetry evenings. Read on for a few of our favourites.

The Screen on the Green

Only in Islington could you watch football in a plush cinema complete with miniature tables, drinks, houmus and dips on tap! The world cup will be broadcast live at Screen on the Green, with Food

& Beer packages on sale now for just £12 - the price of a

ticket to a bog-standard cinema in the West End to see any old film.

They're showing every England, Brazil, Spain and Australia

game as well as the Quarter and Semi Finals plus the World Cup Final

itself, in what promises to be an unforgettable World Cup experience. Book now to avoid

disappointment...

World Cup Slam Poetry Night

Another option that promises a very differenct experience from a night at your local boozer, this footie-themed night of spoken verse is part of the Holloway Arts Festival, which runs from 24th June - 4th July. Poet Luke Wright, who was a big hit at last year's Latitude Festival will be performing at the Woodstore Bar and Grill, N7, on 2nd July from 7pm. More information here.

The Royal Oak, Archway

The Royal Oak in Archway promises to take fans to another dimension, as it will be broadcasting the World Cup in 3D. Customers will have to wear special glasses which 'cost a pound but then they're yours'. It won't quite be like being in South Africa, but it's the closest you'll get in London!

The Chapel Bar

Another slightly glam option for those who like a few chandeliers with their beers, The 280-capacity Chapel Bar in Angel is taking bookings now for groups on their two large screens. Set menus will also be available.

02 Academy

Following on from its success as a screening venue for Arsenal matches, the O2 Academy Islington will be inviting fans to come together for the ultimate

World Cup experience and cheer on England in South Africa. Tickets are

free!

Masala Zone

Like many Indian restaurants across the capital, the Upper Street branch of Masala Zone will be showing World Cup matches this year. It'll be just like watching from home with your curry and beer at hand - but without the washing up.
