As in other parts of London, Islington has seen its fair share of cycle accidents in recent years. But let's not forget that when done safely and with confidence, cycling can be one of the best ways to get around town, and for many of us is a quicker way to get into work than using the bus or tube. I spoke to Penny from N1 cycle shop and bike skills centre Micycle to find out how to enjoy cycling in London.

The Micycle 'bike ambulance' will come to your rescue when your bike breaks down
What are the most common complaints you hear from customers about cycling in London?
Theft. It's beyond a joke. The palaver of having to lock your bike
up securely often takes longer than the ride itself. And
oblivious left turning lorries.
Does Islington have a big cycling community and how does it rate as a place to ride a bike?
Yes a huge cycling community - very healthy. It's so central and there
are excellent rides to follow. Beautiful back streets and cut-throughs,
that a lot of people will never discover unless they are on a bike. And
of course the canal which is brilliant for Docklands and Greenwich.
What's your number one
piece of advice for someone wanting to take up cycling in the city for
the first time ?
The best thing would be to do one of our Dealing with London Traffic courses which are great if you have never cycled in London before or if you have been unlucky enough to have had a scare they can help get your confidence back
Failing that I'd say go out with an experienced friend and stay on the quieter roads until you can cycle assertively. And of course be seen. hideous though those flouro 's vest are - they really help bad motorists spot you. Actually we are stocking a range of gorgeous ones in our shop soon.
What are your most popular workshops?
We run a course of four 2 hour evening sessions. The beginners ones are
really popular, even though you think you know the basics there's
nothing like being shown it again by an expert, they are very relaxed
and friendly, we break for coffee and beers and everyone goes home with
a gleaming bike having learned loads, and about to save money as they
can DIY next time. if people do all of them they should be able to
solve most problems that come up.
