Tube Strike, Monday 4th October. How do you plan to get home?

Once again, it's bad news for anyone hoping to travel by train, or indeed any mode of transport without lengthy delays in London today. The second 24-hour strike by RMT and TSSA poses a major problem for thousands of Londoners commuting to and from central London, with action expected to continue until early tomorrow morning.

For many of us, working from home is happily an option, so if you're in a position to get your daily tasks done at your dining table, this is by far the safest and most public-spirited option. Who wants to add to the hordes of disgruntled and presumably rather angry commuters cramming their sweaty bodies into the city's over-worked fleet of buses if it can be avoided?

Of course, buses aren't the only option if you do want to struggle in, and living in Islington means a walk to work is perfectly possible for many. If your place of work is in the West End or City, it's unlikely to take you more than an hour, and the weather is forecast to be much kinder to us than the Tube drivers over the next 24-hours.

Check out Walkit.com if you're unsure of your best pedestrian route: it'll work out the fastest journey for you and will also equip you with some potentially useful information on how many calories you'll butn in the propose walk, as well as how much C02 you've avoided by not taking public transport or driving.

Another option is, of course, Barclays Cycle Hire. There's now a fully operational bike docking station located on Liverpool Road, next to the new H&M (although my eagle eyed sourced tell me that at time of writing, there are only two bikes remaining to hire) and also at Torrens Street, Angel. The scheme is set to do very well out of the strike, and remember that your first 30 minutes in the saddle are free. That's more than enough time to get from Islington to many parts of Central London!

For the latest strike information, check TFL's service update page, which is currently looking very quiet, like the calm before the storm...
